A Culinary POP-UP Journey at the Fenix Museum
The “Fenix” Migration Museum, with its focus on migration and global connections, provided the perfect backdrop for our pop-up food store. ”Where chosen not only for their deliciousness
also for their cultural history”
Dimsum Siu Kau.
These folded dumplings, typically filled with a mixture of ground pork, shrimp, thin dough wrap, is one of famous snacks of Cantonese cuisine.
Served boiled or deep-fried.
The name "Siu Kau 水饺" literally means "Boiled Dumplings" reflecting their history as
popular street food.

An important aspect of this cultural context is the historical moments of
Katendrecht in Rotterdam.
Katendrecht, also known as "De Kaap", was once the largest Chinatown in the Netherlands.
Starting from the early 20th century, Chinese sailors and laborers settled in this area, transforming it into a vibrant
and unique community.
This history of migration and cultural exchange perfect with the Fenix Museum. Siu Kau, Zongzi, and Classic Peanut Candy (as a tribute to the Peanut Chinese in Katendrecht).
Dutch “Pinda Chinees”
In Rotterdam's Katendrecht, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Chinese dockworkers lost their jobs. Faced with unemployed and poor, some showed creativity to make homemade peanut candy on the streets “Atjehstreet” in Katendrecht. These called as "Pinda Chinees" (花生老人?) found a way to survive with their simple candies.
Chinese Immigrants
The term "Pinda Chinees" became in the Netherlands named in history nostalgic value with their determination and to survive during the difficulty in 1930s. From street vending, they laid the foundation for the later rise of Indo-Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands. Their story is a reminder of how entrepreneurship can help, even in the most poorest circumstances of that time.

Zongzi sticky Rice Packages
Another highlight is Zongzi 粽子, a traditional Chinese dish made of glutinous rice filled with various fillings and wrapped in clasics leaves such as bamboo or lotus leafs. Zongzi is primarily associated with
the Dragon Boat Festival.
We prepare three types of Zongzi-rolls.
